So you find yourself gasping for air at some point into round 4 or min 8 of some chick inspired WOD and you are certain you are going to simply pass out or sprain a bronchial, what do you do?  Stop and wait until things calm down or go all out busting that bronchial loose?  Would you be surprised to know you can actually control and lower your heart rate and respiratory rate without resting and messing up your world record time?  I teach this to my patients who have respiratory issues and truly are running out of oxygen simply walking from their chair to the kitchen.  It’s called Pursed Lip breathing and it  is one of the simplest ways to control shortness of breath. It provides a quick and easy way to slow your pace of breathing, making each breath more effective.

What does pursed lip breathing do?
Pursed lip breathing:

  • Improves ventilation
  • Releases trapped air in the lungs
  • Keeps the airways open longer and decreases the work of breathing
  • Prolongs exhalation to slow the breathing rate
  • Improves breathing patterns by moving old air out of the lungs and allowing for new air to enter the lungs
  • Relieves shortness of breath
  • Causes general relaxation

Here is how you do it:  breathe in through your nose and blow the air out of your mouth with your lips pursed like you are blowing out a candle.  Smell the roses, blow out the candle.  If I had a nickel for every time I have said that!   

So next time the bronchial is about to bust, do your breathing and get back on the bar.  It’s also a great way to calm your nerves and avoid panic for fighters and the like.
