Here are some articles talking about interval training benefits and the difference between interval and long distance. I personally think you should do whatever makes you happy. If doing long distance stuff makes you happy, do it! I love riding long distance on my bike, so I do it because it makes me happy. If you torture yourself with long bouts of cardio for other reasons and actually hate it the entire time, please read the articles and see if you could shorten the time by doing some sprint work. You may find that your results are even better.
